On the ramparts of Ashiqqil Keep, the group fought off seven soldiers, sparing one who revealed that Nale, Herald of Justice, was posing as an Azish Constable. En route to him, Zahel suspiciously "didn't" kill a soldier found broken in half.

They found Nale about to execute Vanzi, a former Emuli sapper who had accidentally killed three non-combatants. Orlan invoked an obscure Azish law to have Vanzi released into their care. When Nale asked about their own crimes, Erytl Photrak confessed everything; after a private talk with Zahel, Nale relented, took the Raysium Knife, and asked them to help Pailiah with Ylt.

The group headed for the Purelake to find a ship to Rall Elorim via the Reshi Isles, guided by Vanzi and Bara through Yulay. News from Sebarial: Odium's forces attack Althkar, and the Iri wage war on Rira with plans to hit the Reshi Isles and possibly Shinovar.

Near Benru, a crazed Fused attacked them — Orlan saw visions of it dying repeatedly over millennia — and Zahel's clothing snapped its neck. Benru celebrated them as returned Knights Radiant. Orlan learned the Parsh were Roshar's original inhabitants; the group learned Wit is ancient and unkillable but can't harm anyone, and about the three realms (physical, cognitive, spiritual). Zahel left after warning Sha that the Undying Palm hunts them both, promising to find her again. Sha also found the final trinket for her sister's necklace.

At the Purelake, Sha bought four poison-brewing books from Kelani for 1,800 marks. Erytl Photrak viewed Barathi's nearly finished blackwood ship (asking 15,000 marks, hagglable to 12,000, possibly less in exchange for a favour).
